Argos coaching staff takes shape, rife with experience
CFL training camp is just around the corner, and while the Toronto Argonauts were slow off the mark, since the hiring of Jim Popp and Marc Trestman, they have wasted little time reloading their coaching staff with competent, experienced hires.
On Tuesday, former Saskatchewan Roughrider head coach Corey Chamblin was named assistant head coach and defensive co-ordinator while Marcus Brady was extended as offensive co-ordinator, a position he’s held since 2013.
Cue the heartwarming reunion music. Prior to becoming the Argos’ offensive co-ordinator, Brady served as first the receivers coach (for three years) and then as the offensive co-ordinator/quarterbacks coach (one year) for the Montreal Alouettes. During that time, the Als won two Grey Cups, and Brady answered to none other than Popp and Trestman.

“Our familiarity with each other will only help as we prepare our offence for the upcoming season.”
The Montreal deja vu vibe here is a strong one indeed.
However, the hiring of Chamblin - who replaces Rich Stubler - has a slightly different feel. The memory of an 0-9 start to begin the 2015 Rider season is still fresh in the minds of football fans. And his head-coaching record, outside of the 2013 championship year, well, it’s mediocre at best.
Fortunately, Chamblin’s a defensive co-ordinator by trade. That’s his strength, and that’s what earned him a head coaching gig in the first place. Consider this a return to his roots. And that’s a good thing.
